Because we now recognize Abraham Lincoln as an almost majestic president, we tend to forget that he emerged from obscurity in rural Illinois. This volume recounts his single term as a Congressman, where Lincoln spoke out firmly against the expansionist war with Mexico. Rather disillusioned with Washington, Lincoln returned home to a quiet life as an attorney, but he continued to read widely, to study contemporary politics, and to enjoy his family life in less stressful conditions. This volume and the other three belong in all public, college and university libraries in this country.
